Reddit is where the scroll goes next. The threads say it better than I can: “has anyone else quit mainstream social media apps, just to be addicted to reddit instead?” has over seventeen hundred upvotes on r/digitalminimalism, and it isn’t alone. People delete TikTok, deactivate Instagram, and a week later they’re refreshing r/all.
It makes sense. Reddit feels more defensible. It’s text, it’s informative, it’s people talking about things you care about. That’s exactly what makes it a better hiding place for the same habit.
Reddit gives you nothing to work with
TikTok has a daily limit, flawed as it is. Instagram has a reminder. YouTube has a Shorts limit. Reddit has no time limit, break reminder or wellbeing setting at all; searching its help center for screen time turns up articles about accessibility and rate limits.
There’s one lever inside the app worth pulling. Turn off home feed recommendations, so your home feed shows communities you actually joined instead of whatever Reddit predicts will keep you there. Since late 2024 that feed shows posts up to five days old, which means it can run dry, and a feed that runs out is a feed you can finish. Then leave the subreddits you only open to scroll.
That narrows the feed. It doesn’t stop you opening it.
Lock it from outside
Apple’s Screen Time can set a limit on the Reddit app, but on iOS 26 the “Time Limit” screen ends in “Ignore Limit”, and “Ignore Limit For Today” is one more tap. It holds only when someone else sets the passcode; this guide covers that setup.
A step gate takes the decision out of the moment. WalkGate locks Reddit until your Apple Health step count reaches your daily goal, then opens it for the rest of the day, or by the minute if you choose Earn Minutes.
- Install WalkGate and allow Screen Time access when iOS asks.
- Pick Reddit in Apple’s app picker. On the free plan, it’s your one locked app.
- Set a step goal you’ll clear on an ordinary day.
- Pick Full Unlock or Earn Minutes.

Close the Safari door too
This is the step people skip with Reddit, and it’s the one that matters most. Reddit works well in a browser, so locking the app just moves you to Safari. Block reddit.com as well, in Screen Time’s Content and Privacy Restrictions under web content. If someone else sets your Screen Time passcode, that block holds too.
If you’re on your third feed
If Reddit is the app you ended up on after quitting two others, locking only Reddit may push you back to them. That’s the substitution pattern in deleted TikTok and still scrolling, and the fix is to block the category rather than the app. WalkGate’s free plan locks one app; Pro locks unlimited apps and whole categories like Social.
It’s also worth asking what Reddit was doing for you. “My mind seeks info” is how one thread put it, and that’s a real need. Long-form reading, a newsletter you chose, or a podcast on a walk can meet it without the infinite refresh. What can actually replace doomscrolling has the criteria.
The exits
You get one 10-minute break a day, which starts only after a 5-second press-and-hold. You can pause blocking in Settings, but that resets your streak and opens everything. No blocker can trap you on iPhone, and the good ones don’t pretend otherwise. What they can do is make the walk the cheapest way back in.
