How it works

One rule. Walk first.

Pick what to lock

Choose any apps — TikTok, Instagram, Reddit, games, browsers. Blocking is enforced by iOS itself, through Apple’s Screen Time framework.

Powered by Apple Screen Time. No root access needed.

Set your step goal

5,000? 10,000? You decide — even 3,000 is a start. Walkgate reads your steps from Apple Health: iPhone pedometer, Apple Watch, or any connected tracker.

No account required. Data never leaves your device.

Walk to unlock

Hit your goal and your apps open automatically. Miss it and they stay locked until midnight. You can pause in Settings if you really need to — but it resets your streak.

Physical friction is the only kind that works.

No willpower required. No timers to beat. App timers fail because they create no friction — you just tap "15 more minutes." Walkgate creates a physical cost.

Features

Built to break the habit.

Core mechanic

Step-gated app blocking.

Set a daily step target. Pick which apps to block — TikTok, Instagram, Reddit, games. They stay locked until your steps are in. No timers to tap through, no one-tap ignore. Just walk.

Enforced by Apple's native Screen Time framework. No backdoors.

Go further

Bank extra steps.

Walk past your goal and bank the difference. Every 100 steps over goal earns 1 minute of screen time. Bank up to 100 minutes — spend it on a day you need early access.

Currency Mode: 100 steps = 1 minute banked. Full Unlock Mode also available.

Choose your mode

All at once, or earn as you go.

Full Unlock: hit your goal once and all blocked apps open for the rest of the day. Earn Minutes: every step converts to screen time you can spend however you want.

Switch modes anytime in Settings.

Track progress

Build streaks. Earn badges.

Your streak counts consecutive days you hit your goal. Reach milestones — Beginner, Walker, Warrior, Disciplined, Legend. See lifetime stats: total steps, days goal met, minutes earned.

Streak resets at midnight if you miss. No shortcuts.

The reward

Hit your goal.
Earn the streak.

Every day you hit your step goal, your streak grows. Reach 7 days and you're a Warrior. Reach 100 and you're a Legend. The app tracks it all — no journaling required.

Beginner 1+ days
Walker 3+ days
Warrior 7+ days
Disciplined 30+ days
Legend 100+ days
Why it works

App timers fail.
Willpower fails.
Physical friction works.

You can ignore a timer. You can't fake 8,000 steps. Apple Screen Time puts an "Ignore Limit" button right on the block — one tap and you're back in. Walkgate's block has no such button. You can pause from Settings, but it resets your streak — so the easy path is just to walk.

Doomscrolling isn’t a character flaw — it’s the intended outcome. Every infinite feed is engineered to override rational thought. Walkgate replaces a tap you can ignore with a cost you have to pay: movement, verified by Apple Health.

The unlock is your body. That’s the difference between a reminder and a gate.

App timers Fails

Zero physical cost. You tap "15 more minutes." Repeatedly. Your brain overrides the tap in under a second.

Willpower Fails

Works for 3 days. Feeds are engineered by billion-dollar teams specifically to defeat it.

Walkgate Works

You can't scroll your way past it. You have to move. That physical cost changes behavior in a way screen-based friction cannot.

Why you can trust the block

Built on Apple’s own blocking — not a workaround.

Walkgate doesn’t fake a block or rely on a VPN trick. It uses Apple’s Screen Time framework (FamilyControls / ManagedSettings) — the same system iOS uses for parental controls. The block is enforced by the operating system, so there’s no settings menu to dig into and no loophole to find.

System-level enforcement

Blocks are applied by iOS itself, the same way parental controls work.

No account, no tracking

No sign-up. Your step data is read from Apple Health and never leaves your device.

No one-tap escape

The block has no inline "ignore" or "skip." You can pause in Settings, but it resets your streak — so walking stays the easy path.

Why I built this
“I built Walkgate because Apple’s ‘Ignore Limit’ button beat me every single day. I didn’t need another timer to tap through — I needed a door that only opened when I actually moved. So I built one with no escape hatch.”

How Walkgate compares.

Most blockers run on timers or willpower — and most "walk to unlock" apps still let you earn your way around the gate. See how Walkgate stacks up against Opal, Freedom, one sec, WalkLock, and Steppin.

FAQ

Questions.

Common questions about how Walkgate’s step-based app blocking works.

How strict is Walkgate — can I just turn it off?

Walkgate is strict by design. The block has no one-tap "ignore" like Apple Screen Time, so there’s no quick escape on the lock screen. You can pause blocking in Settings — Apple requires that apps don’t trap you — but pausing opens all your apps and resets your streak. So the path of least resistance is simply to walk your goal.

What app makes you walk before you can use social media?

Walkgate. You pick the apps to block (TikTok, Instagram, Reddit, games, anything) and set a daily step goal. Those apps stay locked at the system level until your steps — read from Apple Health — reach your goal. Then they open automatically.

How does Walkgate block apps?

Walkgate uses Apple's Screen Time framework to block your chosen apps at the system level — the same technology that powers parental controls. Your steps are read from Apple Health. When you hit your daily step goal, Walkgate removes the blocks automatically. If you miss your goal, the apps stay locked until midnight.

How is Walkgate different from Apple Screen Time?

Apple Screen Time lets you set time limits, but you can bypass them with a single tap ('Ignore Limit') right on the screen. Walkgate has no such one-tap escape on the block. You can pause it from Settings, but that opens everything and resets your streak — so in practice the realistic way back in is to walk your goal.

How is Walkgate different from WalkLock or Steppin?

They share the "walk to unlock" idea, but the strictness differs. Most step-to-screen-time apps use a flexible earn-and-spend model you can work around. Walkgate is the strict version: a hard daily gate with no one-tap ignore, fully on-device, no account. See the full comparison page for a side-by-side.

Does it work without an Apple Watch?

Yes. Walkgate reads steps from Apple Health, which automatically collects them from your iPhone's built-in pedometer, Apple Watch, or any third-party step tracker you've connected. No Apple Watch required.

What happens if I don't hit my step goal?

Your blocked apps stay locked until midnight, when the day resets. There’s no skip button on the lock screen and no grace period. If you’ve banked extra minutes from walking past your goal, you can spend those for early access.

What if I’m injured or can’t walk?

You set your own step goal, so you can lower it to match your situation, and you can pause blocking from Settings when you need to. Walkgate is a focus tool, not a medical device — set a target that’s realistic for you.

Is my health data private?

Yes. Walkgate reads your step count from Apple Health but never stores, transmits, or sells it. All data stays on your device. No account is required.
